Getting to know Dr. McMinn – An Interview

The following are questions Dr. McMinn was asked by an orthodontic interviewer:

“GETTING TO KNOW YOU”:

What are you most passionate about professionally? What most excites you about your work?

I enjoy meeting and exceeding patient expectations in creating a beautiful smile. I love witnessing the joy a patient achieves at the completion of their active orthodontics… that moment when my patient looks in the mirror after their braces are removed!

What do you love about working with your patients?

I enjoy seeing the personal development of my patients during the course of treatment. Often a patient will be very shy about their smile at the start of treatment but slowly gain confidence as treatment progresses.

How long have you been practicing? Why did you choose to join the oral healthcare field?

I have been practicing for 20 years (graduated 1996). I enjoy the mix of utilizing art and science in health care.

Tell us about your team and what makes them so exceptional? What is special about the way your team interacts with your patients?

I have a phenomenal staff team who truly care about our patients. Their infectious happiness and pride in providing great care for our patients creates a positive work environment. I enjoy working with my team each day.

Tell prospective patients something upbeat and fun about your office. Why should they choose your practice over others?

Well, firstly I think patients choose our office primarily because they have heard from their friends in our community about the excellent treatment results obtained at our office. They have heard that our fees are very reasonable for SPECIALIST treatment by an ORTHODONTIST!! We have a wonderful staff who are friendly, knowledgeable, proficient and efficient, who care about each patient’s wellbeing. We do have fun contests to engage our patients in colour contests, poem contests, draws for fun items; however these are not the primary reason patients come to us. Patients appreciate the professionalism and care they receive at our office.

PERSONAL INFO:

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in North York (Toronto) and attended York Mills Collegiate Institute for highschool.

Where do you live now and how long have you been there? Tell us about your family!

After spending many years in London, Ontario while in dental school (4 years) followed by specialist training (3 years), I returned to my roots north of the city… opening an office in Keswick (in my grandparent’s home – built by my grandfather in 1968!) and joining my husband’s orthodontic office in Aurora. We live in the Aurora area with our children.

Where can we find you when you’re not working? What are your favourite ways to spend your time away from work? What are you passionate about personally?

I can be most often found at our farm, working in our garden, enjoying outdoors activities, and playing with our children. I caught my husband’s love of windsurfing “bug” and we have spent much time chasing the wind on Georgian Bay.

Are you involved in any community programs, volunteer activities, or nonprofits? Why is being active in your community important to you?

I am active with various community organizations including Georgina Cares and the Optimist Club. Each year I enjoy organizing the annual Uxbridge Optimist Youth Chess tournament. I keep a policy to grant patients’ requests for sponsorship based on their involvement in a local team, so each year I sponsor many individual teams in our community (hockey, soccer, swimming, dance)!   I also support local schools by providing graduation awards to grade 8 and grade 12 students for proficiency in Science.
